The Importance of Cleaning your Canopy

Extend the Life of a Tensile Fabric Structure

Regular cleaning of tensile fabric structures is essential for maintaining both the appearance and performance of the canopy. Without consistent care, organic matter and airborne debris can build up and become increasingly difficult—if not impossible—to remove over time. The required frequency of cleaning depends largely on the surrounding environment, including factors like airborne dirt, nearby trees, and the level of shading.

We originally installed this tensile fabric canopy in 2015 to enhance the entrance of the office building and provide weather protection for staff and visitors. Its classic double-conic form, supported by a tubular steel framework, not only creates a striking architectural feature but also provides practical weather protection. The design includes an integrated internal gutter system to efficiently manage rainwater runoff.

Thanks to the foresight of the facilities team, who budgeted for annual cleaning, the canopy has remained in excellent condition over the past decade. We recently completed this year’s scheduled cleaning and maintenance inspection.

Prior to cleaning, the fabric showed a light but uniform buildup of surface dirt. As there are no trees nearby, we found no evidence of leaf litter or sap deposits, though there were some bird droppings. The steel framework also remains in good condition, with only minor blemishes near bolt connections—none of which impact the structural integrity or overall appearance.

Following the clean, the fabric now looks bright, clean, and well-maintained. With continued annual maintenance, we expect the structure to remain fully functional and visually appealing for 20 years or more.
