This major refurbishment of the Square shopping centre in Tallaght, Dublin, required some very large fabric thinking to bring the space up to the modern standards that we all expect from our retail experiences.

The architects at Povell Worthington required a scheme to help draw the eye up, to appreciate the large space in the centre and to the new large information screens that were being installed. At the same time the atrium space was suffering from too much direct sunlight during most of the year, which was also not ideal for the new video screens.

TensileFabric proposed 4 no. propeller-type sails to the centre. The sails provided symmetrical form, an excellent surface for the new lighting, sun screening and an improved feeling of movement in the space.

At the same time 10 no. large scallop edged sails were fixed to the south face of the space, tying into the existing steel with strap type clamp fixings (to prevent any drilling of the existing steel to be required).

The installation works were completed over a two week period using a 6 strong rope access crew. It was all done during the night to minimise disruption to the daily shoppers.
